Respiratory protection is required at an assigned protection factor of 10 for shifts of four hours or less and 25 for longer shifts, whether the work is indoors or outdoors. For handheld grinders used for anything other than mortar removal, the same table requires no respirator at all when the work is done outdoors with the equivalent controls. The same standard sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms of respirable crystalline silica per cubic meter of air as an eight hour time-weighted average and an action level of 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
